I have no doubt that the mining Industry back in the early days , drew on a lot of horses gathered from the wild, cheap labour, and horses that gave it their all, hauling out the heavy loads, doing all the heavy lifting. No doubt they were maybe breeding some of these, to the Clydesdale , Suffolk Punch, even pit ponies were popular- because they were small ,strong, but everyone wanted the ultimate horse, that one horse who could be used for everything.

Faithful and loyal the heavy breeds were what built this nation, I grew up with a Clydesdale, learnt to ride on him, he was our everything. I still love them today. But I think we can safely say that our wild horses, our Brumbies are a mix of whatever people needed at that time- and back in those early years, no fences, no boundaries as such -meant for a pretty versatile mixture of breeds.
